The Differential Influence of Decision Characteristics on the Information Acquisition of Expert and Novice Decision Makers

In this study, we examine how task and environmental characteristics differentially affect the decision processes of novice and expert decision makers. Specifically, we consider how decision importance, accountability and complexity influence the information acquisition processes of manager and student subjects in a strategic business decision task. Based on prior research on expert decision making, we formulate hypotheses about whether these three decision characteristics will affect novices and experts differently. In two experiments, we find that importance affects experts but not novices. Also, we find that accountability affects novices but not experts and complexity affects both groups' information acquisition behavior.
